Scale & Polish

The importance of a Scale and Polish for your teeth

Even thorough brushing and flossing may not remove every trace of plaque. This is because most people have irregularities in their teeth; when you are cleaning them, you do not always manage to reach into every nook and cranny. There always seems to be one spot that you overlook or that your brush just can’t quite get into. This is where plaque can build up and harden into tartar. Plaque is a sticky film, full of bacteria, that turns into acid when it reacts with the sugary foods you eat. Tartar is a far harder substance to remove and therefore a regular dental  scale and polish is necessary.

If you allow plaque to build up and do not have it removed you will incur a string of problems: this can include: tooth decay, cavities and gum disease. You must visit your dentist regularly or this plaque will build up and cause far worse problems in the future.

We are better equipped here at Tracey Bell to remove plaque and stubborn tartar, as we have a number of specialized tools at our disposal. The electric scaler is used to remove the toughest tartar; it has a very fine tip that vibrates at high speeds. It also emits a jet of water. Together, the electric scaler and jet of water scrape away the tartar and clean away the debris lodged between the teeth. Hand scalers are used in a variety of shapes and sizers: this is so we can truly clean down the fine details and reach the most awkward of positions.

Finally, we use a rotating brush and special toothpaste to polish your teeth to perfection. They are given a thorough clean and not only will they appear more dazzling but they will feel so much cleaner and fresher.  The whole process is short and painless. You may even enjoy the treatment, as the final polish can tickle a little.
